Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

I’m worried about splinters—are these park benches sanded smooth?

Yes—most park benches are sanded smooth when they’re built, and many are also sealed or stained to keep the surface friendlier to hands and legs. I totally get the worry, though. A rough wooden bench can turn a nice afternoon into a splinter hunt.

The catch is that “sanded smooth” doesn’t always stay that way forever. Wood expands and contracts with sun, rain, and humidity. Over a few seasons, the grain can lift, small cracks can form, and edges can become fuzzy. Benches in shaded, damp spots tend to roughen faster than ones in dry, sunny areas. So a bench that was glass-smooth in June might feel a little textured by September.

If you’re looking at a wooden bench, give the seat a quick touch test. Run your palm lightly across the top and along the front edge. If it feels smooth or only slightly grainy, you’re fine. If it feels fuzzy or you see raised splinters, sit somewhere else or lay down a jacket first. Also check armrests and the underside if kids are going to grip them.

Many parks now use metal, recycled plastic, or composite benches specifically to avoid this problem. Those won’t give you wood splinters. If you find a bench that’s really rough, it’s worth letting park staff know—they can sand and reseal it during routine maintenance.

So overall: yes, they’re usually sanded smooth, but weather can change that. A quick look and touch is all you need.
