In a small urban garden, the most popular bench size is usually 4 to 5 feet long, which is roughly 120–150 cm. In practice, that means a 48-inch or 60-inch bench. A 48-inch bench seats two people comfortably, while a 60-inch version gives you a little extra room for a book, a cup of coffee, or a small potted plant at one end.
The dimensions I recommend most often are:
- Length: 48–60 inches (122–152 cm)
- Seat depth: 18–20 inches (46–51 cm)
- Seat height: 18 inches (46 cm)
- Overall height with a backrest: 31–36 inches (79–91 cm)
This size works well because a small garden usually can’t handle a large 6-foot public-style urban bench without feeling crowded. A 5-foot bench can still feel generous but won’t visually dominate a narrow courtyard, balcony, or pocket garden. A 4-foot bench is even safer for tight spots and gives you enough seating without shrinking the planting area or path.
Try to keep at least 36 inches, about 90 cm, of clear space in front of the bench for legroom and easy movement. If your garden is especially narrow, a 42-inch bench or a compact 36-inch settee can work, but the 48-inch length is the all-around sweet spot for most small urban gardens.
Also check seat depth and height before buying. A seat that’s too deep or too low can feel uncomfortable, especially if you want to sit back and relax. Around 18 inches high and 18–20 inches deep feels natural for most people and fits well with raised beds, containers, and compact city landscaping.
