The short answer is: usually not much — but a metal street bench can make noise if something is loose, worn, or missing. A well-built metal bench with tight bolts and solid joints should be quiet when you sit down. You might hear a small metallic “ping” or a faint creak as the metal takes your weight, especially on older benches or when temperatures change.
Most noises come from metal parts rubbing or shifting against each other. Bolts can loosen over time, washers can wear thin, and powder-coated surfaces can develop tiny gaps at connection points. When you sit, the frame flexes slightly. That flex can turn small movements into squeaks or groans if the hardware isn’t snug. Temperature also plays a role: metal expands and contracts, so a bench that is silent in the morning might creak in the afternoon heat.
The good news is that a noisy metal bench is usually easy to fix. Tightening the bolts, replacing worn washers, and adding nylon spacers or rubber gaskets at contact points can stop most creaks. A little silicone lubricant on moving joints can help too, but avoid oil-based products that attract dirt. If the bench is rusted or cracked, that’s a different problem — it may need welding or replacement.
So if you’re asking because you’re considering a metal street bench for a public space, don’t let occasional noise scare you off. Choose a bench with good construction, anti-rattle hardware, and regular maintenance, and it should stay quiet for years. A little creak now and then is normal for outdoor furniture, but loud clanking or rocking usually means it’s time to tighten something.
