If you’re planning or buying a bench, seat depth is one of those dimensions that makes or breaks comfort. The short answer: the standard outdoor bench seat depth is around 18 inches (about 46 cm) from front to back. That’s the baseline most outdoor furniture makers, DIY builders, and commercial site planners use for a bench with a backrest.
That said, “standard” doesn’t mean “only.” A comfortable outdoor bench seat depth typically falls between 16 and 20 inches. I wouldn’t go shallower than 16 inches for adults, or most people feel like they’re sliding off. Deeper than 20 inches can be awkward for shorter users because the front edge may dig into the back of the knees.
Why does 18 inches work so well? It supports most of the thigh without creating pressure behind the knee, and it gives you enough room to shift position slightly. If the bench has a sloped or contoured seat, you can sometimes get away with 17 inches because the shape helps hold you in place.
