Yes, park benches with built-in solar chargers for phones actually exist. They’re often called solar smart benches, solar charging benches, or solar-powered street furniture, and they’ve been installed in a growing number of cities, college campuses, transit stops, and public parks around the world.
These benches typically have a solar panel built into the seating surface or mounted above the bench. The panel captures sunlight and stores energy in a battery inside the bench, so you can plug in a USB cable — or in some cases simply place your phone on a wireless charging pad — and top up your battery while you rest. Many models also include extra features like LED lighting, Wi-Fi hotspots, or small digital displays that show local information.
You won’t find them on every corner yet. They tend to appear in smart city projects, redeveloped downtown areas, waterfront parks, and university campuses. Cities in the United States, Canada, the UK, Europe, and parts of the Middle East and Asia have tested or installed them. Solar charging benches have popped up in parks in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and Miami, as well as in London and Dubai.
There are a few things to keep in mind. Solar charging is usually slower than a wall charger, especially on cloudy days or if the bench battery is drained by heavy use. The ports may also suffer wear and tear or occasional damage, so it’s smart to carry your own cable and a backup power bank. Still, they’re a great option when you need a quick boost and want to sit outdoors.
If you’re hoping to find one near you, try searching Google Maps or your city’s parks department website for terms like “solar charging bench,” “smart bench,” or “solar phone charging station.” They’re not everywhere, but they’re real — and they’re a handy mix of public seating and clean energy.
