How do your urban benches perform in high-wind areas?

Great question—this is one of the first things landscape architects and property managers ask when a project is near a waterfront, on a rooftop, or in an exposed plaza. Our urban benches are designed to handle high-wind conditions in a few specific ways.

First, we manage weight and anchoring. Heavy concrete or steel benches often weigh enough to resist uplift on their own, but we still recommend anchor bolt kits for surface-mounted installations. For lighter models, we use internal ballast compartments or oversized base plates to keep the bench planted.

Second, we reduce wind load. Benches with solid panels can act like sails, so we favor perforated metal, spaced timber or aluminum slats, and open frames. Air passes through the gaps instead of pushing the bench sideways. This makes a big difference on rooftop terraces and coastal promenades.

Third, we use materials that survive wind-driven rain, salt, and sand. Marine-grade stainless steel hardware, powder-coated galvanized steel, and high-density concrete with anti-corrosion additives are standard on our high-exposure models. The finishes are tested for abrasion and UV resistance because wind can turn sand and debris into sandpaper.

Fourth, we reinforce the connections. Joints are welded or through-bolted rather than clipped. Armrests, backrests, and legs get extra bracing. In extreme wind zones, we specify larger base plates and deeper embedment so the bench does not loosen over time.

Finally, we test to real wind loads. Prototypes are evaluated at wind speeds equivalent to 90–110 mph, with gusts from multiple directions. We look for uplift, vibration loosening, and damage from flying debris. If your project has a specific wind map or exposure category, we can provide calculations or work with your engineer.

Maintenance after a storm is simple: check the anchor bolts, clear debris from the slats, and inspect the coating. Because the bench is heavy, open, and properly anchored, routine checks are usually quick.
