Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How do your outdoor benches resist graffiti—can it be easily removed?

Great question—this is one of the first things landscape architects and park managers ask us. The short answer is yes: on our outdoor benches, most graffiti can be removed fairly easily, especially if you get to it within a day or two. It will not always wipe off with plain water, but the surface is designed so spray paint, markers, stickers, and even scratched tags do not permanently bond.

Here is how we build them to resist graffiti.

First, the slats. Many of our benches use high-density polyethylene, or HDPE, slats rather than painted wood or bare metal. HDPE is naturally non-porous, so paint and ink sit on the surface instead of soaking in. That makes a huge difference. On painted wood, graffiti can bleed into the grain, and cleaning usually means sanding or repainting. On HDPE, you can typically soften the paint with a graffiti remover and wipe it off without changing the color or texture.

Second, the frame. We use powder-coated steel for most frames. Powder coating is harder and less porous than wet paint, so it resists staining and light scratching better. Many of our frames also receive a clear anti-graffiti topcoat. That topcoat acts as a barrier: the graffiti bonds to the barrier, not to the powder coat itself. When you remove the graffiti, the barrier can be reapplied if needed, but the bench finish stays intact.

What does removal actually look like? For fresh marker or spray paint on HDPE, a biodegradable graffiti remover or a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on a soft cloth will usually do the job. Let it dwell for a minute, then wipe with a clean rag. For larger areas, you can use a low-pressure power washer with warm water and a mild detergent. Avoid abrasive pads, wire brushes, or harsh thinners because they can dull the surface.

For powder-coated frames with an anti-graffiti topcoat, use a non-abrasive graffiti removal spray and a microfiber cloth. Stickers and tape come off with warm soapy water or a plastic scraper. If the paint has been sitting for weeks or baked in the sun, you may need two or three applications, but the paint can still usually be softened and lifted.

The key is time. The faster you remove graffiti, the easier it is. On a non-porous bench, fresh paint has not fully cured, so it releases more readily. That is why we recommend checking high-traffic areas routinely and keeping a small graffiti removal kit nearby.

There is no material that makes a public bench 100% graffiti-proof forever. But by using non-porous HDPE, powder coating, and optional sacrificial anti-graffiti coatings, our outdoor benches make graffiti a maintenance issue, not a replacement issue. Instead of repainting or replacing a vandalized bench, you can usually clean it in minutes and keep it looking designed and intentional.

If you are specifying benches for a park, plaza, transit stop, or campus, we are happy to recommend the exact finish and cleaning products for your location. Just ask.
