There’s nothing more annoying than sitting down with a drink and feeling that telltale rock under the bench. I’ve dealt with this on flagstone patios, grass, gravel, and slightly sloped decks. The good news is you rarely need a new bench. Most wobbles can be fixed in under 30 minutes with a few cheap materials.
First, figure out where the movement is coming from. Sit on the bench and notice which leg lifts, or place a spirit level across the seat. If one leg is simply short because the ground dips, shims or adjustable feet will solve it. If the whole frame flexes, the problem may be loose joinery instead of the ground itself.
Option 1: Adjustable leveling feet
This is my favorite fix for hard surfaces like concrete, tile, pavers, or wood decks. You can buy universal adjustable glides or threaded furniture feet. Drill a pilot hole into the bottom of each leg, screw in the threaded insert, and thread the foot into place. Turn the foot with a wrench until the bench sits solid. The big advantage is you can re-level the bench later if the ground shifts or settles.
Option 2: Rubber shims or composite wedges
For a fast, no-drill fix, use hard rubber shims. They are weatherproof, grip the ground well, and won’t rot like wood. Stack them under the short leg until the rocking disappears. If the exposed edge bothers you, trim it with a utility knife and touch it up with black exterior paint. Avoid wooden shims outdoors because they absorb water, swell, and eventually rot.
Option 3: Pavers or flagstones
On grass, soil, or gravel, the best solution is usually a small foundation. Place a concrete paver or flat stone under each leg. If one side is lower, use a thicker paver or add compacted sand beneath it. If a paver sits too high, dig a shallow recess so the top is flush with the surrounding ground. Check with a level as you go. This spreads the load and keeps the legs from sinking into soft ground.
Option 4: Level the ground itself
If the bench has a permanent spot, level the area directly under it. Remove grass and debris, add crushed stone or paver sand, rake it flat, and tamp it with a hand tamper. A slight slope is fine for drainage, but you want all four legs sitting in the same plane. This takes more effort but gives the cleanest, most natural look.
Option 5: Sink or cut the high-side legs
For rustic wooden benches on dirt or lawn, you can dig a shallow depression under the high legs or trim the legs slightly. Only do this with pressure-treated or naturally rot-resistant wood. Seal any cut end with wood preservative. Measure carefully and remove a little at a time so you don’t overshoot.
Option 6: Add weight or anchor the bench
Sometimes a bench rocks because it is too light or the frame has flex. Add a cross brace between the legs if one is missing. Tighten all bolts and screws, and apply exterior wood glue to loose joints. For a permanent location, anchor the bench to a concrete pad or use ground stakes. This stops both wobbling and shifting.
Common mistakes to avoid:
Don’t use a random rock or folded cardboard as a shim. It might work for a day, but it will slip or flatten. Don’t force threaded feet into wet or cracked wood without pre-drilling. Never bury untreated wood legs directly in soil because they will rot quickly. Finally, check the bench again after a few weeks. Ground settles after rain and freeze-thaw cycles, so you may need one small adjustment.
If I had to choose one approach, I would use adjustable leveling feet and rubber shims on hard patios. On soft ground, set each leg on a paver with a compacted sand base. That combination solves most wobbly bench problems and looks intentional rather than patched together.
