Honestly, the answer is a bit of both—it really depends on which urban bench you're looking at and where it was installed. If you're in an older downtown area or a heritage district, there's a good chance you're sitting on brand-new metal and freshly milled wood. Traditional urban benches often use new cast iron, galvanized steel, or powder-coated aluminum frames with solid hardwood slats like teak, oak, or ipe. These materials are chosen because they're strong and have that familiar streetscape look. But in newer parks, greenways, schoolyards, and eco-focused developments, recycled materials are becoming the norm. Many modern urban benches are made from recycled plastic lumber, also called HDPE lumber, which comes from things like milk jugs, detergent bottles, and plastic bags. Recycled steel or aluminum frames are common too, and some benches use reclaimed wood or composite decking made from wood fibers and recycled plastic. These benches can look like painted wood from a distance, but they resist rot, splinters, and weather damage much better. So the honest answer is that it's no longer mostly new metal and wood. Recycled content is now widespread, and in many public projects it's actually required by green procurement policies and sustainability standards. That doesn't mean new metal and wood have disappeared, but they're no longer the automatic default for city furniture.
