Yes—there are park benches made from biodegradable materials, though “biodegradable” and “fully recyclable” are not exactly the same goal. If your priority is end-of-life recovery for an urban bench, you have real options: some are made from natural materials that can safely break down, while others are made from single-material metals or recycled plastics that can be recaptured without landfill.

1. Untreated or thermally modified wood
The most common biodegradable bench option is solid wood. Look for FSC-certified hardwoods such as black locust, oak, or thermally modified ash and pine. Thermal modification uses heat and steam rather than toxic preservatives, so the wood remains natural and can be chipped or composted once metal hardware is removed. A fully recyclable bench made from aluminum or steel will usually last longer and is easier to recover in cities with established metal recycling. For most urban projects, the best sustainable park seating is a modular, single-material or easily separable bench: FSC hardwood on a recycled aluminum frame, stainless steel fasteners, no adhesives, no mixed plastic-wood composites. That gives you a bench that is durable enough for public use and genuinely recoverable at end of life.
