Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

What’s the return policy if an urban bench arrives damaged or not as described?

If your urban bench arrives damaged or not as described, the return policy usually protects you—but only if you act quickly and document the problem. Too many buyers wait a week, install the bench, and then realize the armrest is bent or the color is wrong. By then the claim is much harder.

Start by inspecting the bench on the delivery day. If the packaging is crushed, torn, wet, or clearly mishandled, write that on the delivery receipt before signing. If the driver refuses to wait, take photos of the truck, the package, and the label while it is still outside. Then open the package carefully. Photograph any damage to the bench, mounting hardware, powder coating, wood slats, or metal frame. If the bench does not match the description—wrong size, wrong color, missing backrest, different material—photograph the label and the product from several angles.

Next, contact customer service within the return window. Most urban bench suppliers ask you to report freight damage within 48 hours to 7 days after delivery. For “not as described” issues, many allow 14 to 30 days, but do not wait. Send your order number, a short description of the problem, and clear photos. If the bench is for a commercial project, city streetscape, campus, or park, mention that context because some sellers have a dedicated commercial claims process.

What you can expect: For shipping damage, the seller will usually offer replacement parts, a full replacement bench, or a refund. They may arrange a freight pickup for the damaged unit or tell you to dispose of it. For a wrong or misdescribed item, you normally have the right to a full refund or exchange, and the seller should cover return shipping because the error is on their side. Do not pay for return freight without confirming that the seller will reimburse you.

Keep the original packaging until the claim is closed. Avoid assembling, installing, or modifying the bench until you are sure you will keep it. Once a bench is installed or shows signs of use, some return policies become stricter, and damage caused during installation can be blamed on you. Also check if the bench was custom-made, custom-colored, or built to order. Custom pieces may be non-returnable unless they arrive damaged or materially different from the order.

A practical tip: Before you buy, read the seller’s return policy carefully. Look for terms like “damaged on arrival,” “freight damage,” “not as described,” “return shipping responsibility,” and “inspection window.” If you are ordering a heavy outdoor bench, ask whether the carrier provides liftgate service or curbside delivery. Many damage claims start because the bench is heavy and gets dropped during manual unloading.

To sum up: inspect immediately, take photos, report the issue within the stated window, keep the packaging, and do not install the bench until the issue is resolved. A reputable seller should replace or refund a damaged or incorrect urban bench without making you pay extra.
