First, there is not one universal “ADA-approved” label for street benches, but an accessible bench should follow the common dimensional and usability guidelines used in public site design. The top of the seat should sit about 17 to 19 inches above the ground, and the seat depth should be around 20 to 24 inches. That range makes it easier to sit down and stand up without the bench being too low or too deep.
Arm supports are a big part of that usability. On our accessible street benches, we offer end armrests, center armrests, or a combination of both depending on the length of the bench. The armrests are typically set 8 to 10 inches above the seat, which gives a stable push-off point for someone who needs help rising. On a longer bench, a center armrest can make a real difference because it gives people a support point in the middle instead of forcing them to reach to the very end.
For a classic streetscape, I usually recommend a 6-foot recycled plastic bench with a full back, two end armrests, and a center armrest. It holds up well outdoors, does not need much maintenance, and meets the seat height and depth ranges used for accessible public seating. If you need something more architectural, we also have cast aluminum and powder-coated steel models with bolt-down legs or in-ground mounts.
Placement matters too. The bench should sit on a firm, level surface, and you should leave clear open space at one end or in front so a wheelchair user can pull up beside it or transfer safely. A bench can have the right dimensions, but if it is placed on a sloped walkway or crowded against a wall, it is not truly accessible.
