I get this question a lot, and it’s a fair one: nobody wants to stand up from a patio seat and find a stain across the back of their light-colored shorts. So let me give you the honest answer.
Yes, we do treat our outdoor benches with chemicals—but not the kind that should stain your clothes once the bench is ready for use. We use a water-based, low-VOC weatherproof wood sealer that penetrates into the wood instead of sitting on the surface like a heavy paint, varnish, or cheap deck stain. After curing, it bonds with the wood fibers and does not transfer under normal sitting conditions.
There is one exception worth knowing about. If a bench is freshly sealed, or if you apply a refresher coat at home, it needs time to dry and cure. During that window, some sealers can mark fabric. That is why we cure our benches before they leave our facility. If you re-seal your bench at home, just follow the product instructions and avoid sitting on it in light clothing until the surface is dry to the touch and no longer has a strong solvent smell.
We also avoid the heavy preservatives that are most likely to stain clothes, such as creosote, tar-based treatments, and used motor oil. For our cedar and teak benches, we may use natural wood oil instead of a synthetic coating. Once cured, those oils are safe for everyday sitting too.
If you ever see a mark after sitting on an outdoor bench, it is usually dust, pollen, or surface dirt rather than the wood treatment. A quick wipe before you sit is the easiest way to keep your clothes clean.
