Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

Can I get an urban bench that matches a specific color from a paint swatch?

Yes, you can absolutely get an urban bench that matches a specific color from a paint swatch. I get asked this a lot by landscape architects, property managers, and designers who are trying to tie a streetscape or campus palette together. The short answer is yes, but the quality of the match depends on the bench material, the coating system, and how you approve the color.

Most metal urban benches are powder coated, and powder coating is the most flexible route to a custom color. If you have a physical paint swatch, many manufacturers or coating shops can scan it with a spectrophotometer and create a powder coat formula that gets very close to your target. If the swatch has a known brand and code—such as Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, RAL, Pantone, or NCS—that is even easier. RAL and Pantone are especially common in street furniture, so some suppliers already have those pigments in their system.

However, “match” does not always mean 100 percent identical once the bench is outdoors. Paint swatches are usually designed for interior architectural paint, not textured metal finishes. Powder coat can read slightly smoother, flatter, or glossier than your original chip depending on the chemistry. Sunlight, shade, and surrounding hardscape also change how a color looks. A bench on a bright plaza can look lighter or warmer than the same color in a studio. That is why you should always ask for a physical color sample before approving production.

Here is the process I usually recommend. First, ask the bench manufacturer if they offer custom color matching. Many commercial suppliers have a custom RAL option or a house powder coat program. Second, send them the paint swatch, the paint brand and color code, or a small physical sample. Third, request a coated metal sample—usually a small steel or aluminum plate—in your color. Fourth, take that sample outside and check it in natural light, not just under office lighting. Fifth, ask about the coating specification. For outdoor urban furniture, you want an exterior-grade powder coat such as a Qualicoat-approved system or an AAMA 2604/2605 rated finish. If the bench is steel, ask about pretreatment too, such as zinc primer or e-coat. A beautiful custom color will not last if the coating is not made for exterior conditions.

There are limits depending on the material. Recycled plastic lumber benches have fewer color options because the color is molded into the material. Wood benches can be stained or painted, but matching a paint swatch on wood is less precise and requires more maintenance over time. Custom powder coat colors may also come with a minimum order quantity or a longer lead time, especially for small projects.

If a perfect match is too expensive or slow, a good workaround is to choose the nearest standard RAL color. Many urban benches already ship in standard shades like anthracite grey, moss green, or signal blue. Sometimes a stock color is close enough and much more affordable. If you are working on a larger streetscape or campus, you can also use the same custom color across benches, bike racks, bollards, and planters so the whole space feels coordinated—even if the bench does not perfectly match a wall paint swatch.

So yes, custom color matching an urban bench is absolutely possible. Treat the paint swatch as your target, not your proof. Work with a manufacturer that offers exterior-grade powder coating, request a physical sample, and approve that sample in real outdoor light. That way you get an urban bench that looks like it belongs in your project instead of a close-enough guess.
