Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How much does a typical park bench weigh so I know if I can lift it with a friend?

Hey, that's a really practical question—I’ve been there myself, trying to figure out if moving a park bench was a two-person job or a call-for-backup situation. The short answer is: yes, for the vast majority of standard park benches, you and a friend can absolutely lift and carry one together. But the actual weight can vary a surprising amount depending on what the bench is made of. Let’s break it down so you know exactly what you’re dealing with.

A classic wooden park bench, like the kind you see with cast iron ends and slatted timber seats, usually weighs between 100 and 150 pounds. If it’s a more solid, heavy-duty timber design without metal supports, it might push closer to 180 pounds. These are definitely liftable with two reasonably fit people. One of you grabs each end, squat down properly, and you’ll be able to shuffle it into place without too much drama.

Metal benches—think all-aluminum or steel frames—come in a wider range. An aluminum park bench is pretty lightweight, often just 70 to 90 pounds, which is a breeze. But a fully steel bench, especially one with thick gauge tubing, can hit 180 to 250 pounds, sometimes more if it’s extra-long or has armrests and backrests built into the frame. Still manageable for two people, but you’ll definitely feel it.

Now, if you’re looking at a concrete bench, that’s a whole different beast. A small precast concrete bench starts at around 400 pounds and can easily go past 600 or even 800 pounds for larger, solid designs. Even a “low profile” concrete slab bench without legs is usually 300+ pounds. In that case, two people aren’t lifting it safely—you’d need a small team or mechanical lifting gear. I'd stay far away from trying to deadlift one of those with just a buddy.

Recycled plastic lumber benches, which are becoming super common in parks now, sit nicely in the middle. They typically weigh between 120 and 180 pounds, very similar to wooden benches. So again, a comfortable two-person lift.

So for pretty much anything except concrete, you and a friend are in the clear. Just remember to lift with your legs, not your back, communicate clearly, and maybe use some moving straps or a dolly if you have to go more than a few feet. You’ll be done before you know it, with a story to tell about your unexpected furniture moving skills.
