It’s not entirely maintenance-free—no coastal furniture truly is—but it’s as close as you can get without moving the bench indoors. We usually give it a light electropolished finish to remove surface imperfections where salt could lodge, and sometimes we add a subtle brushed grain that hides any micro-pitting beautifully.
For clients who want the warmth of painted steel or need a specific colour to match wayfinding schemes, we lean heavily on a duplex coating system. The steel frame gets hot-dip galvanised first, inside and out, which creates a metallurgically bonded zinc layer that will protect the underlying metal even if the top coat gets scratched. Then we apply a super-durable architectural polyester powder coat that’s specifically formulated with zinc-rich primers and marine-grade resins. This two-layer approach works wonders because the galvanising handles any breach in the powder, while the powder shields the zinc from direct salt exposure. We cure it in a way that tightens the pore structure of the coating, so salt particles have a harder time getting a foothold. One finish that’s gaining traction with councils on a budget is the thermal zinc spray followed by a sealed top coat, sometimes called metallisation. Instead of dipping, we spray molten zinc onto the steel, building up a thick, slightly porous zinc layer that we then seal with an epoxy or polyurethane clear coat. It gives a distinct matte grey texture that looks purposeful and modern, and the sealant stops salt from eating into the zinc too quickly. It’s not as low-maintenance as 316 stainless, but it’s repairable on site, which makes maintenance crews very happy.
