Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

Do your outdoor benches have a textured finish for extra grip on the seat?

Honestly, that’s one of the best questions anyone can ask before choosing a bench. The short answer is yes—our outdoor benches are absolutely designed with a textured finish to give you that extra grip on the seat. It’s not an afterthought for us; it’s right up there with weather resistance and structural strength.

I remember sitting on a smooth painted bench after a light drizzle once. It felt like an ice rink. That’s exactly the experience we wanted to prevent when we sat down to design our own range. The texture we use isn’t just a light sanding—it’s a deliberate, consistent profile that creates just enough friction without feeling rough on bare skin or snagging clothing. Whether you’re settling in with a coffee on a dewy morning or sliding over to make room for a friend on a dry afternoon, the surface stays reliably steady.

What gives it that grip? It depends on the material of the bench. For our hardwood collections, like teak and eucalyptus, we mill the slats with a fine brushed grain that naturally raises the wood fibers just slightly. You can feel the grain under your fingertips, like a very fine comb, but when you sit it’s purely functional—keeping you planted. For our powder-coated aluminum and steel benches, the texture comes from a specialized wrinkle-finish powder coat. It’s sprayed on and then cured to form a subtle, orange-peel-like dimple that creates continual micro-contact points. It’s extremely durable, won’t peel, and because it’s integrated into the metal itself, it doesn’t wear smooth in high-traffic areas like a painted-on anti-slip strip might.

We’ve also tested these finishes across wet and humid conditions. Smooth surfaces hold a film of water and can turn slimy with algae in shaded spots. A textured finish breaks that film, lets water drain away between the peaks, and actually reduces how much algae can get a foothold. That means less moss scrubbing for you and a safer seat in the long run. And for places where the bench gets full sun, the texture prevents that slick feeling you sometimes get when a sealer or varnish starts to soften in the heat.

If you’re choosing between models, the amount of texture does vary slightly based on the look. Our rustic timber benches have a more pronounced grain you can really see and feel, while the contemporary metal benches keep the texture a bit more refined so it doesn’t fight with the clean lines. Either way, none of them are slippery. We’ve had customers with poolsides, restaurant patios, and community gardens tell us they specifically noticed how confident they feel sitting down with a tray of drinks or while kids scramble on and off. That’s the kind of real-world feedback that tells us we got the grip just right.

So yes, extra grip is built in. It’s not a separate add-on, not something you need to specify—it’s simply how we make the bench. If you’re comparing samples, you’ll know it instantly when you touch the seat slat or metal plank. Reach out to us any time and we’d be happy to send you a close-up photo or even a small material swatch, so you can feel the texture for yourself before you buy.
