That’s not marketing fluff — it’s why you see 100-year-old teak docks still standing in marine environments where rot pressure is off the charts. For our more budget-conscious lines, we switch to pressure-treated southern yellow pine. The pressure treatment forces waterborne copper azole deep into the cell structure of the wood. Unlike old-school CCA treatments, copper azole doesn’t leach heavily and creates a permanent barrier; you could bury that pine in damp soil and the decay fungi would starve before they ever breached the inner cells.
But wood treatment alone isn’t enough. Water is the real enemy, because it invites both rot and wood-boring beetles. That’s why every joint in our benches receives a dose of waterproof construction adhesive during assembly, and the end grains — which act like straws pulling moisture upward — are dipped in a marine-grade end-grain sealer. Then the entire bench is coated. On teak, we use a penetrating oil that nourishes the wood’s own oils while repelling water. On painted benches, we apply a zinc-rich primer followed by a two-part polyurethane topcoat that cures into a shell so tough that carpenter bees bounce right off. For hardware, we don’t mess around: all bolts, nuts, and bracket connectors are 316 marine-grade stainless steel. Rust is just another form of rot for metal, so we eliminate it completely.
I often get asked, “Does this actually work in places with brutal winters or coastal humidity?” The answer is yes, and I’ve seen it. We have benches in municipal parks around Vancouver, where rainfall exceeds 1,500 millimeters a year, and after a decade, the only sign of aging is a graceful silver patina on the teak — zero warp, zero powderpost beetle exit holes. Maintenance matters too, of course. If you rinse your bench with fresh water once a year and keep fallen leaves off the seat, you’re drastically reducing the micro-habitats where fungi love to spawn. But the built-in resistance means even a neglected bench will outlive most of its counterparts by a wide margin.
