Until you look down and notice the wood is cracking like a stale biscuit, or worse, cradling a colony of fungus. I’ve lived by the sea long enough to have made every furniture mistake in the book, and the park bench is the one that teaches the hardest lessons. So you’re asking what kind of wood you use for a park bench in a coastal area with salty air. Let’s skip the textbook talk and get into the stuff that actually holds up, the woods that laugh at salt fog and still look good doing it.

First, you have to understand that salty air isn’t just “wet” air. It’s a cocktail of moisture, sodium chloride crystals, and relentless UV if you’re anywhere open. That salt gets into the pores of wood, and every time humidity swings, the crystals expand and contract like tiny crowbars splitting fibers apart. The sun bleaches the lignin out of the surface, turning wood grey and brittle. The marine environment also brings fungal spores that adore humidity above 80%, turning softer woods into sponge cake within a couple of seasons. You need something dense and naturally oily, or properly treated, and honestly, ideally both.

Teak is the obvious name, and for a reason that has nothing to do with marketing. True, old-growth Tectona grandis from sustainably managed plantations in Southeast Asia has a silica content and rubber content that make it almost waterproof and insect-repellent. Its natural oils won’t wash out like a surface varnish. I have sat on a teak bench that’s been bolted into a Cornish cliff since 2009, drenched in salt spray every high tide, and the joinery is still tight. It has gone a beautiful silver-grey patina that people pay extra for. Maintenance? You do nothing. Literally nothing. If you want the honey-brown color to stay, you’ll be cleaning and applying teak protector twice a year, but structurally it can survive decades of neglect. The catch is cost and ethics. Real teak under the proper certifications (look for FSC or SVLK) is expensive and frequently counterfeited. If the price seems too good, it’s probably plantation-grown heartwood-sapwood mix that rots five times faster.

If your budget or conscience prefers a non-tropical option, the tree you want to befriend is Quercus alba—American white oak. But not just any white oak; you need quarter-sawn boards. The medullary rays in quarter-sawn white oak make it virtually impenetrable to moisture along the face grain. The wood contains tyloses, bubble-like structures in the vessels that plug up the capillary action, so saltwater doesn’t wick up from the feet. I built a bench from quarter-sawn white oak for a friend’s deck overlooking Monterey Bay three years ago. No finish at all, just sculpted and sanded. Today it’s a uniform silver-grey, no checks wider than a fingernail. The bench will outlive you, and probably your grandchildren.

Maybe you want something softer under the hand, literally and philosophically. Coastal redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) is a sentimental favorite for many seaside communities in California. Old-growth heartwood is naturally rot-resistant, lightweight, and stable. The problem is that genuine old-growth heartwood is now protected and largely off-limits. The farmed second-growth redwood available today contains too much sapwood—the pale, cream-colored stuff—which rots almost as fast as pine in constant humidity. You can still use it if you’re prepared to paint or apply a heavy penetrating epoxy sealer, but then you lose the beauty of the grain. A pure heartwood redwood bench, if you can salvage reclaimed timber from an old water tower, is a masterpiece. Otherwise, treat modern redwood as a paint-grade material.

Cedar often sneaks into this conversation, so let me be blunt. Western red cedar is lovely, light, and smells like a hope chest, but it is too soft for a public bench exposed to salt abrasion. Salt crystals carried by wind act like fine sandpaper; they will erode the earlywood between the darker bands, leaving a corrugated surface that can't hold hardware. You'll be re-tightening bolts every spring and flipping boards after a decade. If you must use cedar for aesthetics, look at Alaskan yellow cedar, which is denser and more resistant, but still nowhere near teak or ipe in longevity.

What about thermally modified wood? This is a newer star. Native species like ash, poplar, or even pine are baked in oxygen-free kilns at over 200°C. The process caramelizes the sugars that fungi crave and collapses the cell structure that holds water. The resulting material is dimensionally stable and rot-resistant without chemicals. I’ve tested thermally modified ash benches on a saltwater marsh boardwalk, and after four years they’re performing as well as teak—at a third the price and with a sustainable pedigree. The look is consistently dark chocolate brown that weathers to a silvery driftwood grey. The compromise is brittleness; the boards can split if you drill without care, and they don’t hold screws as tenaciously as untreated wood. Pilot holes and end-sealing become non-negotiable rituals.

One of the most crucial factors that goes overlooked is everything that isn’t wood: the hardware. In saline air, you can’t use standard zinc-plated steel screws or mild steel brackets. The corrosion will happen inside the wood, hidden, staining it black and eventually crumbling. Spend the extra on 316 marine-grade stainless steel fasteners. Even 304 stainless will develop tea staining in a coastal zone, and that rust will bleed into the grain. Go 316. Also, isolate dissimilar metals with nylon washers if your bench design has aluminum or brass accents. What you’re preventing is galvanic corrosion, which the salt spray will accelerate dramatically.

Now, let’s talk design, because a coastal bench has to shed water fast. No flat horizontal surfaces with pockets that hold puddles. All slats should have a slight bevel or radius on the top edges so water runs off cleanly. Gaps between seat boards—allow 6 to 8 millimeters so the wood can breathe and dry quickly after a squall. The legs should never be buried directly in soil or set in concrete that can trap dampness. Use adjustable stainless steel feet that lift the wood even 10 millimeters above the deck surface, letting air circulate completely. Every single end grain must be sealed or, better yet, designed so water drips off without touching it. A bench with mitered arms that expose end grain to the sky will fail at those corners long before the rest.

Finishes for a coastal bench are an emotional subject. I believe in letting wood go grey if the species can handle it. Teak, ipe, and thermally modified ash go grey with dignity. If you’re going to apply something, avoid film-forming varnishes like polyurethane or marine spar varnish that crack and let moisture get trapped underneath, accelerating decay. A penetrating oil like pure tung oil or a linseed oil/wax blend nourishes the fibers but requires reapplication. Epoxy sealers with UV inhibitors work on boats but will need sanding and recoating every few years. Honestly, the simplest approach for a public or low-maintenance private bench is to pick a wood that doesn’t need a finish and design the bench so water runs away.

So let me distill it. For a park bench in salty air: top choice, FSC-certified plantation teak if budget permits and you love the silver patina without lifting a finger. Next, quarter-sawn white oak for a domestic hardwood that ages beautifully and asks for little. For a true buy-it-for-life municipal installation, ipe from verified sources, with the caveat that you must handle installation meticulously. And the intelligent upstart, thermally modified ash, which gives you 90% of the performance with sound environmental credentials.
