Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

Are your outdoor benches fire-resistant, in case someone tosses a cigarette on them?

That’s such a fair question — honestly, you’re not the first person to ask, and in public spaces it’s something we think about a lot. The short answer is yes, our outdoor benches are absolutely built to handle a tossed cigarette without becoming a fire hazard.

Here’s the reality. Almost all of our benches are made from heavy-gauge aluminum or powder-coated steel, and the slats are either aluminum, recycled plastic lumber, or treated hardwood. Metal doesn’t burn. It’s as simple as that. If someone flicks a lit cigarette onto an all-aluminum bench, it just sits there and eventually dies out. Nothing catches, nothing smolders — the metal might get a tiny scorch mark that you can wipe off, but it’s not catching fire. Even our recycled plastic lumber slats are manufactured with fire-retardant additives and typically have a Class B or Class C fire rating depending on the material mix, meaning they resist ignition and won’t sustain combustion on their own. You’d need a direct, sustained flame to make anything happen, not a quick cigarette contact.

We also test this stuff because public seating has to meet certain codes. In commercial settings — parks, transit stops, apartment complex courtyards — benches often need to comply with ASTM or similar fire-performance standards. That means the materials are chosen so that if a careless person drops a smoke, you’re not suddenly dealing with a burning bench. On our hardwood options, like Ipe or teak, the density is so high that a cigarette will barely leave a mark, and the oils present don’t make them easy to ignite either; they’re naturally fire-resistant.

I think the bigger worry is usually melted polyester clothing or plastic bags stuck to the bench, not the bench itself burning. With metal benches, even that’s a non-issue — they just heat up a bit and cool down. The only thing I’d mention: if you are going to put a bench on a wooden deck, the bench won’t be the fire risk, but the deck underneath could be if a cigarette falls through a gap. So we always recommend using a cigarette receptacle nearby, just to keep everything tidy and safe.

Bottom line: yes, a lit cigarette flicked onto our benches isn’t going to make them catch fire. You can breathe easy on that one. If you’ve got a specific model in mind, I can point you to the exact fire-rating documentation — always happy to nerd out about that stuff.
