Do your outdoor benches have holes for drainage, or will water pool on the seat?

I get this question a lot, and honestly, it’s one of the smartest things to ask before buying outdoor furniture. Nobody wants to walk out after a light rain and find their bench turned into a shallow birdbath.

The short answer: yes, our outdoor benches are absolutely designed with drainage in mind, and no, water won’t pool on the seat. But let me explain exactly how we achieve that, because it’s not just about drilling a couple of random holes.

First off, think about the materials. We primarily work with high-density polyethylene lumber, powder-coated aluminum, and responsibly sourced teak or eucalyptus. Each of these behaves a bit differently when wet, so a one-size-fits-all drainage solution doesn’t exist. For our poly lumber and recycled plastic benches, we engineer the seat planks with a very subtle convex curve — so slight you don’t feel it when sitting, but pronounced enough that water naturally rolls toward the edges. Between each plank, we leave a gap of about 5 to 8 millimeters. Those gaps are your primary drainage channels. Rain hits the surface, beads up because of the material’s slight texture, and then gets guided off to the sides or straight down through the spaces. No standing water, no deep puddles.

On our aluminum and metal-slat benches, you’ll actually see the drainage holes because they’re part of the aesthetic. We use elongated, laser-cut slots that run the length of the seat or discrete circular perforations placed in the lowest points of the pressed metal profile. These are engineered to be large enough to let water through instantly — even during a heavy downpour — but small enough that they don’t catch the heel of a shoe or become a tripping hazard. The metal itself receives an electrostatic powder coat that makes water sheet off rather than cling, so what doesn’t drain through the holes simply glides away.

Teak and eucalyptus wooden benches follow a more traditional but equally effective path. We never use solid, unbroken slabs for seating. Instead, individual slats are spaced apart, and any mortise-and-tenon joints include a hidden drip channel at the bottom of the tenon. That means even water that sneaks into the joint has a designated escape route. Over time, natural checking (those tiny hairline cracks that real wood develops) actually works with this design, not against it, further preventing any possibility of water sitting on the surface.

What about flat, solid-surface benches like those smooth concrete or stone-look designs? That’s where a centered, barely visible drain hole comes into play. We cast or drill a single 6mm hole at the precise geometric low point of the seat — calculated by a slight 1-2 degree slope that’s indistinguishable when you sit but inexorable when water starts flowing. Think of it as the same physics that makes your shower floor drain correctly, just miniaturized and disguised.

I should also mention that all our outdoor benches are tested in real weather chambers. We simulate three years of rain, UV, and freeze-thaw cycles so we can watch how water behaves over time. If we ever spotted pooling during testing, that design would never reach production. Several models also include a secondary benefit: the same gaps and holes that handle water also allow airflow to dry the seat from underneath, which prevents that slimy biofilm you sometimes get on perpetually damp furniture.

So, picture this: it rains overnight. Morning comes, the sun hits the garden, and by the time you pad out barefoot with your coffee, the bench seat is dry to the touch — slightly darkened patina from the moisture the wood absorbed and already released, but no puddles, no stains, no damp surprise on your trousers. That’s the goal, and that’s the standard.

If you’re comparing benches and one seems suspiciously solid with no visible drainage solution, I’d gently suggest you flip it over or check the spec sheet. A quality outdoor bench should never trap water. Ask about slat spacing, surface slope, hidden weep holes, and material porosity. A well-designed bench doesn’t just resist moisture; it actively manages it, so you spend zero time thinking about puddles and all your time enjoying being outside.
