Common Problems and Effective Solutions for urban benches

How much does a typical outdoor bench weigh, because I need to move it occasionally?

Let’s be real—there’s no single number I can just hand you, because a “typical” outdoor bench can weigh anywhere from a delicate 15 pounds all the way up to a back-breaking 250 pounds or more. The actual weight comes down entirely to what it’s made of and how it’s built. As someone who has grunted and dragged more garden furniture across a patio than I care to admit, I’ll break down what you’re most likely going to face so you can plan ahead.

For a classic wooden bench made from something durable like teak, oak, or acacia, you’re generally looking at 55 to 90 pounds for a standard four-to-five-foot model. That’s the sweet spot for most backyard and porch benches you’ll find at home improvement stores. If you go for a softer, lighter wood like cedar, the weight might drop to a very manageable 35 to 50 pounds. But be careful with those bargain flat-pack wooden benches—they can be deceptively heavy if they use dense, cheap engineered wood, so don’t always trust the price tag to indicate lightness.

Metal benches are the ones that will really test your friendship if you ask for help moving them. A typical cast aluminum bench sounds intimidating but is actually a pleasant surprise, often clocking in between 40 and 60 pounds. It’s sturdy, rust-resistant, and easy to tip onto a dolly. Wrought iron or heavy steel benches, on the other hand, are the absolute beasts of the category. These can easily weigh 120 to 220 pounds. If you’re moving one of these occasionally, don’t be a hero—use a furniture dolly with straps, or unscrew the legs if you can, because dead-lifting it alone is a fast track to a thrown-out back.

Plastic and resin benches are the champions of portability. A basic all-weather resin bench assembled from a box might weigh as little as 15 to 30 pounds. You can literally tuck one under your arm and walk it across the yard. High-density recycled plastic lumber benches sit a bit heavier, typically from 45 to 70 pounds, mimicking the heft of real wood without the maintenance. Then you have those lightweight aluminum sling-style benches or camping benches that fold flat, which rarely tip the scales beyond 20 pounds. If moving it solo is a regular thing, this is your category.

The real trick to moving a bench occasionally isn’t just knowing the number on the scale, it’s understanding how the weight is distributed. A long, heavy wooden bench with a high back can feel twice as hard to maneuver as a compact metal one of the same weight simply because the bulk throws your center of gravity off. If yours is on the heavy side, grab a friend, lift with your legs, and for anything over 80 pounds, a two-wheel dolly is the best twenty bucks you’ll ever spend. Before you commit, you can usually find the exact item weight on the retailer’s product page under “specifications” or “shipping weight”—control-F is your best friend there.
